Chapter 6:

When Frank Purcell jumped down from the rear of the truck, Tom Hawker stood pensively waiting for him. Purcell watched the lorries that were loaded with dead and wounded drive west, back towards the German border. The LandCrusier was at the head of the column, with three of the MAN KATs trailing.

Hawker looked down at the ground for a long thoughtful moment, his features twisted. Then he stole a sideways glance at Frank Purcell.

“We’re not following the others back to Germany, are we?”

“No.”

“You’re still going ahead with the mission to rescue Devereaum’s daughter?”

“Yes,” Purcell said with grim resolve.

“Why?”

“Because I made a promise, Tom,” Purcell said. “And because a lot of good men died here today. I won’t allow their sacrifice to be in vain. I’m going to free Devereaum’s daughter and get her back to Berlin – or die trying.”

Tom Hawker’s shoulders hunched with resignation. “Fair enough,” he said. “Then I’m with you all the way.”

Purcell assembled the remaining Devils; just thirty-five men still fit to fight. Some of the survivors were visibly distraught; they had seen good friends gunned down in a bloody firefight.

“I made an oath,” Purcell addressed the Devils, meeting each man’s eyes in turn. He saw Gareth Snow, Henri LeCatt and RTO Pat Devline amongst the ranks. “I vowed to rescue Sonia Nowak from that Russian prison camp – and that’s exactly what I plan to do. The Devils are down, but we’re never defeated, and I feel like unloading a shit-storm of payback on the Russian army after what they did to our brothers. The blood of good men has been spilled here today and too many of them have died as heroes. I won’t let their sacrifice be for nothing.” He saw steel come into the eyes of the men around him and it hardened his own resolve. They were with him – every one of them.

“Right now, the Russians will be mobilizing a patrol in response to the smoke and the explosions. They will know their road-block has come under attack. Pretty soon this sector is going to be swarming with enemy troops and drones. We’ve got to get as far away from here as possible. We’re heading due east, off road, in the remaining two MAN KATs. It’s the last thing the Russians will expect, but it ain’t going to be easy, or comfortable. We’ll be using back roads and moving across-country if necessary – and we won’t be stopping again until we reach the outskirts of Kolbiel. That’s over a hundred clicks of bad road between us and our objective.”

As always, Pat Devline was the first to step loyally forward. He rallied the men. “I say we fuck the Russians up,” he declared with a snarl, spitting venom.

The Devils squeezed themselves aboard the two remaining trucks with Purcell in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle and Hawker in the passenger seat of the trailing truck.

“There’s a dirt service road that runs east through the forest located about a mile north of here.
